Thrasher Encourages Radon Testing in Observance of National Radon Action Month

In observance of National Radon Action Month, Thrasher will offer special discounts on radon testing and mitigation services.

Thrasher to offer discounts on radon services throughout January

January is National Radon Action Month and the Environmental Protection Agency is encouraging people to check the radon levels in their homes.

Radon is a naturally-occurring radioactive gas that is invisible and odorless. It is estimated that one out of every 15 homes in the United States has high radon levels. According to the EPA, radon is responsible for more than 20,000 lung cancer deaths each year. Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers.

Earlier this year, several federal agencies announced Advancing Healthy Housing – A Strategy for Action. The initiative was created to promote healthy housing and the connection between living conditions and residents’ health. The strategy also promotes cost-effective methods for reducing in-home health hazards such as radon.

The EPA and Surgeon General recommend that all homes be tested for radon. The amount of radon in the air is measured in "picocuries per liter of air," or "pCi/L." The EPA suggests having a radon mitigation system installed if testing shows a radon level of 4 picocuries per liter or higher. According to the Nebraska Department of Health & Human Services, Nebraska has a high incidence of radon in homes; more than half of radon test results in the state are above the action level of 4 pCi/L.

In observance of National Radon Action Month, Thrasher will offer special pricing on radon testing and mitigation services throughout the month of January. Customers who visit Thrasher’s booth at various local trade shows and signup for radon services will also have the opportunity to take advantage of special promotions.

For most Americans, their greatest exposure to radon is in their homes. Because there is no known safe level of exposure to radon, the EPA recommends that homeowners consider fixing their home for radon levels between 2 pCi/L and 4 pCi/L. Even radon levels below 4 pCi/L may pose a risk, but the risk of lung cancer can be reduced by lowering radon levels.
